I remember the first time I ever saw him. I merely sneaked a glance at him and then looked away again. It was like seeing him wasn’t anything “big” to brag about. He didn’t even mean anything to me. I don’t talk to him or even say hi to him. That was until I fell in love with him. It was just a regular day, same as always, when I talked to him. He smiled a lot. And me, having a weakness for cute smiles, felt all gooey inside. We talked and talked for hours. That was when our friendship started. We continued hanging out and talking about our lives. We hung around a lot at his house. Watched movies together, played video games, talked about our problems to the point that we even cried together. We became really close friends when it hit me. I was in love with him. And then, I started avoiding him. Not because I hated him, but because I didn’t want our friendship to be broken once he finds out I was in love with him. As much as it pains me not seeing him, I had to at least try in order to save our friendship. Years passed and he never found out about my feelings for him. We remained close friends and always kept in touch with each other. I even wondered why until now, he still didn’t have a girlfriend. I asked him about it and he said that he was in love with someone but was afraid to tell the person because he didn’t want to break their friendship.
“Why don’t you tell her? She might understand you know. Maybe she likes you too.” I said, smiling, though inside i was crying.
“You really think so?” He asked.
“Sure. Any girl would be lucky to have you.” I replied.
“You really mean it?” He asked again.
“Yeah. Sure.” I said.
“I love you. I have loved you for five long years and believe me, I still do.” He suddenly said and looked at me longingly.
I couldn’t believe my ears. Is this a dream? “Pinch me. I must be dreaming.” I blurted out.
“You’re not. I love you. I always have.” He smiled and held my hand.
“Umm. I love you too?” I said, unsure.
“Is that a question?” He chuckled.
“Oh. Sorry. You know how I am. It’s the nerves. Just surprised.” I laughed and elbowed him.
“I know, I know. I love you. If I were granted anything in the world, I’d wish for you over and over again.” He said smiling widely.
“How did I get so lucky?” I whispered.
“Simple. That’s because you deserve it. You’re such a sweet and kind girl. Any man would be lucky to have you.” He smiled and kissed me.
“Promise this isn’t a dream?” I asked again.
“Why are you so convinced this is a dream?” He laughed.
“That’s because I’ve been waiting for this to happen for five long years. You have no idea what it’s like.” I said.
“Of course I know what it’s like. I even remember thinking that if i can’t have you, I’d die.” He smiled eyes twinkling.
I held his hand, kissed him on the cheek and said, “There. That means i believe you. I love you. So much.”
I wrote this story a day before my birthday :) February 18, 2011
The song Lucky by Colbie Calliat had me started in writing this love story between two bestfriend. It’s fast paced so bear with me. I guess my writing skills aren’t honed enough yet :)))

It all began with a confiscated cell phone and a timely email. The email was about Warren Buffett, an American billionaire who does not have a computer neither a cell phone. Buffett does not socialize with the high society crowd and prefers being home eating popcorn and watching television. He said, “Don’t try to show off, just be yourself, and do what you enjoy doing.” Buffett’s lifestyle amazed me. Being fifteen and so much hooked to cell phones, I never thought that I could live a day without it.
One day, my obsession to texting was tested. My classmate was using my phone in class, and had no idea that a teacher was around. So, since using of mobile phones in class was a minor offense, my cell phone got confiscated. Thankfully, it was just the first offense. So, at least, it would only be two weeks. But then I thought, how could I survive two weeks without a cell phone? How am I supposed to tell my parents about what happened?
I was so preoccupied about my cell phone that the next day in our Physics class, instead of asking Sir Desi if we were going to have a quiz the next day, I said, “Sir, is there no tomorrow?” My classmates laughed at that and said, “Karen, it’s just your cell phone, it’s not the end of the world!”
Looking back to the way I worried about my phone, I realized how materialistic I was becoming, to worry about a single cell phone when I have living breathing friends who provide the warmth and comfort that are not possible with cell phones.
I ponder upon how Buffet would go through his life as a billionaire owning sixty-three companies yet seeing no significance on the existence of a cell phone. What more of one who is a simple student? Surely, not a million pesos would be lost if a text is left unanswered! A confiscated phone brought forth opportunities to concentrate on one’s studies and slowly too, inculcated a deeper essence of being a student as the cell phone ceased to become a glued accessory to my whole system. Gone were the days when my parents would scold me for being too obsessed to texting. To be honest, amazingly in just two weeks of not having a cell phone, texting seemed foreign already. Upon getting back my cell phone, I immediately sent a group message. Surprisingly, I found it tiring to reply to the people who acknowledged my GM. Now, it seems normal to just leave my cell phone lying around the house untouched 24/7.
The supposedly two weeks of nightmare turned out to be a reminder that there are more important things than my cell phone. It can’t breathe like how people do, it can’t sympathize with you nor can it help you with your problems. So why waste so much time in texting when we can spend more quality time with friends? Cell phones can’t give comfort when one is sad, friends can. Never pour out all your time in texting. Losing my cell phone has become a blessing in disguise too. The so-called nightmare was actually a chance for me to not only do well in my studies but also to enjoy my last few months as a high school student. Always remember, just do things that you are comfortable with and not because it’s the latest trend these days. Look around you and you will see that there are greater things which may not be the BEST, but will surely bring a smile to your faces. Live life as if it’s your last with a promise of more fulfilling opportunities ahead. J

P.S i do not own the photo but i wrote this article :)

This modern age of visuals and high technology sees young and aggressive people like us glued to gadgets and activities that come in varied colours and dimensions. Sad to say, reading which is the most basic and one of the popular 3 R’s of education – that is, Reading, ‘Riting and ‘Rithmetic has somewhat turned taboo to most. For us who see and appreciate the beauty of the awakening power of words on print, we still find ourselves eagerly and lusciously feasting through a book’s pages in extreme delight!
You will surely find yourselves doing that if you get the chance to grab with either of these two books being discussed herein – a good book report selection or simply just for one’s aesthetic satisfaction! It’s sheer joy choosing between travelling through a modern-day Greek mythology or imaging yourselves in the middle of a Roman gladiators’ arena. Come on and take a peek into these two choices…
Percy Jackson and the Olympians
Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a book series by Rick Riordan originally aimed at the teenage audience. However, this series could attract readers of all ages. Most people believe that a book good enough to be made into a movie, is a book worth reading. But this book, even before it was made into a movie, has become one of the most sought after books in the world. It is probably because the series is written in an exciting, detailed manner, but at the same time, easier for the younger readers to understand.
Percy Jackson at age twelve is diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, but his life is changed forever when he discovers that he is a demigod, —- that his brain is hot-wired in Greek and his restlessness is because demigods are built for combat. To top it all off, he is the son of one of the BIG THREE, Poseidon, Greek god of the sea. Joined by his friends Grover, a satyr and Annabeth, another demigod and daughter of Athena, together, they embark on a quest to retrieve Zeus’ lightning bolt which Percy is accused of stealing. They have to retrieve the bolt and return it to its rightful place before a war between the gods would erupt. The three friends face daring obstacles and work together as a team to overcome greater evil and save the world.
To those who find Greek mythology interesting, this book is the one for you. You’ll not only encounter gods and demigods but also other creatures such as satyrs, centaurs, nymphs, cyclops and pegasi. Gods who still exist today currently reside atop the Empire State building in New York City. This story is a combination of action, adventure, Greek mythology with a dose of romance which young adults can easily relate to.
You will be amazed at how Rick Riordan modernizes Greek Mythology in such a way that it is almost believable. Check out Percy Jackson and his mystical world and you will realize that though you may have limitations, like Percy, you are purposefully and specially made.
The Hunger Games
Can you ever imagine having to kill or be killed?
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a book written in a powerful and frightfully brilliant manner that it surpasses the intended age group and thus, can attract readers of all ages. The trilogy is a complete package, incorporating a bit of romance, suspense, drama, adventure, and yes, even history.
Released in 2008, the book’s first publication garnered praise from all corners of the literary globe. Katniss Everdeen, the story’s protagonist, overwhelmed critics, fellow authors and readers with her role as a sacrificial warrior and female heroine, leaving a reader as he or she embarks on a journey with her from her life having to hunt in illegal lands just to provide for her family, to being manipulated by the Capitol, and having to join the Hunger Games which is a gladiatorial game where the contestants are called tributes and only one victor emerges from the arena alive. Though it is set in a brutal dystopian future, Collins manages to infuse moments of pure beauty that could rival any modern fiction, urging readers to crave for more.
The trilogy is written in the first person perspective, where readers are able to step in Katniss’s shoes. Here she prepares for battle before the eyes of the whole nation and finally decides that she has to fight against the other tributes who are bent on their own survival. Katniss aims to keep he promise to her sister, Prim, that she would win the game unharmed.
Though the story also depicts a graphic description of combat and warfare, it also adds action, suspense, and mystery which altogether add to the development of the story. The Hunger Games trilogy is also added with a tinge of romance as Katnis meets Peeta, a boy paired with her and is also a serious contender in the games. Katniss struggles between her unwanted feelings for Peeta and the obvious fact that she would eventually have to kill him in order to survive.
A stupendous journey in the end, this book will guarantee an enjoyable and unforgettable experience. A young student could simply relate the story to his own search an struggle for survival in the real world against the camouflages of life’s uncertainties and is confronted with decisions that would entirely change his life. Don’t miss reading the Hunger Games or miss a thrill of a lifetime.
